How Do UVC Air Purifiers Work?

You probably know that the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV) results in painful sunburn. But did you realize that a different type of ultraviolet light can be installed to keep your residence’s air clean?

The sun gives off two types of dangerous UV rays, UVA and UVB. These damaging rays can lead to sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles and other types of premature aging.

There’s another type of UV light, known as UVC. While direct exposure to this ultraviolet light is bad for your skin or eyes, it can safely be applied to clean air, water and some surfaces.

West Michigan Heating & Air Conditioning Services uses this light in some of our products to improve air filtration in Hudsonville residences.

Applications for Ultraviolet Light

This specific wavelength is referred to as “germicidal” as it wipes out the DNA of bacteria and viruses. When pathogens move through this light, they eventually die because they can’t reproduce.

This makes UVC light a potent alternative to chemical disinfection. Germicidal light is used in many disinfection procedures, like medical laboratories and hospitals. It’s also used to clean drinking water and other liquids made in food processing.

It’s growing in popularity to purify air in residences in Hudsonville. That’s because it can also wipe out typical indoor contaminants including mold, mildew and bacteria. This is an added benefit for loved ones who deal with seasonal allergies or asthma.

How to Use Germicidal UV Light in Your Residence

We install a germicidal UV light in your HVAC system’s ductwork. Because the light is put in the ductwork, it makes it compatible with many heating and cooling units. This also keeps its light safely confined while delivering great disinfection for your home’s air.

Dirty air is freshened in a two-step process, first traveling through your air filter and then the UV light before circulating throughout your home. Even when your heat or air conditioning isn’t operating, these lights still work to keep your air, ductwork and home comfort equipment clean.

This whole-house solution is greater than a portable air purifier, which is limited to cleaning the air in one area. Portable air purifiers also can’t purify your ductwork or the innerworkings of your HVAC system. A clean HVAC system is usually a more efficient one that may even run for an extended period of time. And, the majority of portable air purifiers have a bad reputation for making ozone.

When considering buying a germicidal lamp for your home, it’s critical to choose one that doesn’t create ozone. While ozone is good at getting rid of odors and chemicals, it could also irritate your lungs and cause other respiratory troubles.
